Base Civic starts at 16k in Canada. Down here, the cheapest Civic is 20k.
And of course, they get the 4-digit Micra unavailable to us.
WTF?

You don’t want the micra, trust me.

I don’t think they are equally equipped. I remember old si in Canada being the same as usdm ex.

Canuck Civics built to same specs (especially safety) as down here in soon-to-be Trumpland?

I probably don’t, but people that would spend 12-14k on a Mirage would have no problem spending 10k on a Micra.

I don’t care. Honda should sell the Civic DX down here. A nice quality basic car that is great for people’s everyday needs.

True, but does the mirage even sell well?

Yes, the same mini crosstour-shaped with no more two-tier dash 2016 we get. Canada gets a basic DX model; the lowest down here is the LX, which is priced essentially the same in both countries.

Mitsubishi sold over 20k last year, and almost 40k total since 2013. Nissan would be able to sell at least that many Micras down here.

Wonder if it’s possible to buy a car in, say, Toronto, and bring it here.

I have seen that cars in the us are expensive too, here in Chile they cost about the same.

Base model in Canada is the DX. The LX (standard in the US) is the 1-up model in Canada and is more expensive.
Things the LX has that the DX doesn’t:
-Optional CVT (DX is manual only)
-lane departure sensing
-collision mitigation braking
-forward collision warning system
-Road departure mitigation
-HondaLink emergency assist
-adaptive cruise control
-body colour door mirrors (they’re black on the DX)
-7" TFT colour meter displace with driver info
-acoustic windshield
-“dynamic” guidelines on rear view camera
-arm rests with cup holders
-steering wheel-mounted cruise control
-60/40 split/folding rear seat back (still folds, just not split)
-Heated front seats
-stereo with 20watts more power
-Apple carplay/android auto
-Sms text/email function
-2 USB device connectors (DX only has 1)
-WIFI tethering

And with our exchange rate you can get them even cheaper.

Would the exchange rate factor into that?

Yep people make bank exporting cars when dollar is low (its painless for cars made in Canada/US/Mexico. If you can deal with a kph cluster much savings can be had. Though the automakers caught on and a lot of them cancel warranties if you do this with a car that still has factory warranty.

My brother bought his Civic a few years ago in the US for $17k. I think the base model in Canada comes without AC. Cant get that one in the US.

Right. The us Ex was sold in Canada as the Si.
In Canada the Si Was sold as the SiR. Same car, plus abs, heated mirrors, and daytime running lights.
...at least in 99-00.

-lane departure sensing
Eyes. Got it.
-collision mitigation braking
Brakes. Good thing they’re standard.
-forward collision warning system
Eyes, again.
-Road departure mitigation
Hands, steering wheel. Okay.
The other stuff in the package is quite nice, though. Heated seats are the one thing I really want in my next car because of Canadian winters. A/C would have to be included, too, because of Canadian summers. Fuck.

Our dollar is stronger than theirs, and they have higher taxes, too.

And none of that shit is needed.

Honda’s warranties are so short it doesn’t matter anyway.

Does this hold true for other brands as well?

Can’t argue with that, wonder why they even had this difference.

Honda is the strictest but I think some of the other manufacturers might now have similar policies. The GM dealer on the Canadian side advertised this option to Americans when I lived in a border town. But that was years ago so GM may have clamped down.

I haven’t noticed it in cars so much as the base cars in canada are usually much more spartan than the “equivalent” car in the states which justifies the lower price.
But I have noticed it greatly in trucks. Trucks are way cheaper here than in the states.

Canadian here. As far as I’m aware of it is like this for ALL the brands.

Too bad we don’t get the more spartan base models down here. People would be more welcoming of cheap basic cars than the companies realize.
